Illuminated Reticles – Light Up Your Shot

Choosing the right riflescope reticle can be a daunting task given all the options available to both competitive shooters and hunters alike.

An average reticle will allow you to line up your shot with ease. However, they are more suited for well-lit areas. Sometimes you may find yourself needing just a bit more visibility of the reticle, including early morning and evening hunting or even hunting on poor weather days.

The solution? Illuminated reticle scopes.

Illuminated scopes have built-in lights that help to create an illuminated reticle . This reticle style is ideal for adverse weather conditions, including:

  • Pre-dawn
  • Twilight
  • Rain
  • Snow
  • Cloudy conditions
  • Foggy Conditions

What’s important to note, however, is that illuminated reticles do not illuminate your actual target.

Illuminated reticle scopes are lit by a red illuminator inside the scope. This colors was chosen because it’s easily picked up in low light conditions, but do not cause the pupil to contract as much as it would with white light.

When in use, these reticles only alter the brightness of the reticle. This provides a contrast between the reticle and your target, allowing you to properly place your reticle where you want it on the target’s body when shooting live game or on a stationary target.

It’s crucial to make a note of any laws regarding the use of illuminated reticles in your area. While many states in the U.S. have altered their regulations to allow the use of illuminated reticles, some areas have specific rules that must be adhered to.

For instance, in the state of Colorado, hunters are allowed to hunt with illuminated reticles, while in Montana, illuminated reticles are not prohibited for rifle hunting but are banned for the archery-only season.

So, make sure you are checking all hunting rules and regulations in your area before you purchase an illuminated reticle.
